Small Business News

6th October 2011

Credit cards can offer SMEs convenience, says the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)

Credit cards can be seen as an expensive and risky way to borrow but they are often a convenient and flexible option for Small and Medium size Enterprises (SMEs) to fund expenses. Providing debt is controlled, credit cards can be a good way to make purchases and finance day-to-day outgoings. Clive Lewis, ICAEWs Head of Enterprise, explains:

With difficult economic conditions and constrained access to finance, many small businesses opt for forms of finance that offer quick and easy access to cash. Besides being secure, credit cards offer flexibility and can help businesses to monitor and control expenditure. With a wide variety of company or corporate payment cards on the market it is easy to find one best suited to your business.

Essentially, credit cards:

Allow purchases up to a specified limit

Offer an interest-free period

Allow a minimum repayment each month, but charge interest on the balance

Incur no interest if the bill is paid in full by the specified date

Can be issued to employees, with an approved spending limit, allowing owners to effectively manage and monitor staff purchases

Clive continues,

Business owners who use credit cards typically have an interest-free period of up to 56 days before they have to settle the bill, which can help with the companys cash flow. It can also help to cut administration. With a company credit card you pay one bill each month, no matter how many transactions you make. Itemised monthly statements help with administration and accounting.

Using a credit card means business owners do not have to carry large amounts of cash or a company chequebook and can keep close track of expenditure. They are also convenient for paying everyday company expenses over the internet or by phone.

Making purchases using a credit card also offers protection if any items are faulty. If you purchase a faulty item on a credit card, under the Consumer Credit Act 1974, the credit card company is liable along with the trader for any breaches of contract or misrepresentations. The goods must have cost more than pound;100 and no more than pound;30,000.

For start-up small businesses, using a credit card can help build up a credit record which could help secure better rates on other forms of finance, such as bank loans or overdrafts. Most lenders are reluctant to lend to businesses if there is no payment history in settling bills.

Clive adds:

A bad credit history may not exclude using credit or debit cards but it may be that you need to trade as a business for 18 months to 2 years to establish a trading history and a credit track record before applying for a card. Ultimately, it is important that you choose the right card for your business. Interest rates, charges, interest-free periods and benefits can vary a great deal and it is advisable to shop around and negotiate to ensure you get the right card to help finance your business.

The use of credit cards for start-ups and SMEs are just one of the subjects an ICAEW Chartered Accountant can help with. The Business Advice Service (BAS) is a scheme that gives small businesses a free consultation with an ICAEW Chartered Accountant with no further obligation. See www.businessadviceservice.com for further information.

Reports have indicated that lenders are offering more access to borrowers with a bad credit score as a result of certain factors that are currently in place that have led to some creditors seeing lower levels of credit card use by certain consumers. Bad credit borrowers are usually in the position where they are either relying on credit to stay afloat for a short time or are seeking out a line of credit as a way to begin the bad credit repair process when bad credit is a problem in their lives. What this means is that consumers may have more access to certain lines of bad credit credit cards or loans, as a result of some financial institutions attempting to overcome the hesitation on the part of some consumers to use their credit.

This comes from information that the Federal Reserve recently reported stating that some consumers are either focusing on paying off debt or are simply in a position where they are afraid to acquire debt through either personal loans or credit card use, but as some creditors are seeing drop-offs in these areas, it has allowed for some bad credit borrowers to potentially slip in when a lender may have otherwise been hesitant to allow a line of credit to a particular individual. Yet, this does not mean that consumers who are in a bad credit position should necessarily borrow, particularly if it is as a way that a consumer may stay afloat with certain necessary purchases.

Bad credit consumers have made mistakes in the past when it comes to getting lines of credit that may be available despite being a poor credit position, and using either credit cards or loans to make purchases, pay off certain debts, or consolidate debts. Yet, it’s no secret that consumers who are in a better position will be unlikely to get an affordable rate on either a loan or credit card, and this can make overall costs more expensive in the long run, despite the fact that some borrowers are in a position where minimum monthly payments are affordable.

However, unemployment has remained at a high level, with most recent reports indicating that we are still at a national rate of 9.1%, so this could factor into why creditors are seeing a reduction in consumer credit card use, as there are some users who may be attempting to avoid debt because they simply cannot pay what they owe or are focusing on paying down debt rather than acquiring more debt on a credit card or through a loan, which may be more costly due to interest.

However, consumers who are looking for access to bad credit credit card or loan opportunities may be able to use them to their advantage if proper planning and forethought factor into these types of credit and their use. Bad credit repair is usually one of the few reasons that financial advisers will urge consumers to seek out a line of credit despite being in a position where their score is quite low, but if consumers are seeking an affordable line of credit specifically for individuals with a low credit score, many officials often urge these consumers to look at alternatives, like credit counseling or even debt management, if their purpose for using these credit sources centers around paying off debts, consolidating, or even using these lines of credit to pay for everyday purchases.

There can be more that has to be done to repair your credit than just a bad credit auto loan

Taking the first step

Once you’ve started financing a bad credit car there are additional steps you should often take to improve your credit scores and clean up your credit reports.

We’ve seen this situation because for nearly twenty years we’ve been a part of bad credit auto sales here at Auto Credit Express.

Our web site was created for people with bad credit and spells out the bad credit car loan process along with the issues that sometimes lead to repossession while showing them why, unlike a buy and pay here dealer, the loans our dealers make can lead to better FICO scores.

Additional credit repair

But besides terrible credit auto loans there is something else that usually can be done to improve your credit scores. If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to check that the information in your credit reports is accurate.

To help you do this, we’ve created a new web site at FutureCreditScore.com and partnered with Michigan-based UCES to offer you another credit repair opportunity.

UCES

United Credit Education Services (UCES) is affiliated with a federal credit union. Its also a financial services company that specializes in credit education and restoration and is top-rated by the Better Business Bureau.

If you decide this is the way to go, you’ll find yourself using a web-based application and working with a team of experienced professionals that will guide you through the process of disputing inaccurate, erroneous and obsolete information in your credit files.

This will give you the chance to raise your FICO scores both quickly and legally. In addition, if a low credit score has prevented you from getting approved for an auto loan or if you’re unhappy with either the interest rate or terms of your current loan, you can, with the help of the professionals at UCES, take the necessary steps to repair your credit and improve your credit scores at all three credit bureaus.

The Bottom Line

For more information on the steps you can take to correct information contained in your credit reports as well as improve your credit scores, go to www.futurecreditscore.com.

When it comes time to establish your auto credit, you should know that Auto Credit Express specializes in placing customers with bad credit with dealers that can help them get approved for a bad credit auto loan.

So if you’re serious about getting your car credit back on track, you can begin by filling out our online auto loans application now.

Securing a car loan is getting easier regardless of your financial situation. This even includes car buyers with credit scores in the 500- to 600-point range, according to Experians second-quarter Automotive Credit Trends Report.

New car loans for car buyers with credit scores below prime jumped 22.4% compared to the same period last year, while car buyers with the worst credit, so-called deep subprime scores, saw the largest increase of 44.1% over the same period. Overall, the average credit score for new car loans dropped by 10 points, while the average credit score for used car loans dropped by eight points.

Since almost half of all consumers have credit scores that are below prime (putting them in the so-called nonprime, subprime and deep subprime categories), thats good news for many car shoppers. Car loan rates are still quite high for this group, ranging from 6.7% to 13.5% on average. In fact, new car shoppers who are deep-subprime consumers — those with the worst credit and who are now more likely to find financing — actually have slightly higher interest rates than last year.

Buyers with deep-subprime credit scores have a 13.5% interest rate on average compared to 13.1% for the same time period last year, according to Experians report. As a result, the average monthly payment for new-car buyers in this credit category is $468, the highest average among all buyers with varying credit, even though they are financing the lowest average amount, just $22,742.

No matter what your credit situation, it still behooves you to wait until your credit score is higher before getting a car loan. Moving up one credit category, which could be just a few points depending on your score, can make a huge difference in your monthly payment. Using Bankrates auto loan calculator, financing $25,000 (the average amount financed on a new car) over a five-year term (the typical length of a new car loan) would result in monthly payments of $575 for deep-subprime buyers, $533 for subprime buyers and $491 for nonprime buyers, using the current average interest rates from the study.

For used-car buyers in these credit categories, the difference in payments is also dramatic. Financing $17,000 (the average amount financed on a used car) over a five-year term would result in monthly payments of $429 for deep-subprime buyers, $399 for subprime buyers and $359 for nonprime buyers, using the current average interest rates from the study.

With these differences in interest rates, its smart to work on improving your credit score before you need a car loan. When its time to buy a new car, be sure to check the latest car loan rates to ensure you are getting the best interest rate possible for your situation.

People with bad credit looking for an affordable new car this October should check out this list of the ten least expensive new cars for a problem credit auto loan

Buying new with bad credit

Applicants needing horrible credit auto loans often ask if it’s possible to finance a new car.

We’re aware of this fact because for the past nineteen years we’ve been involved with bad credit car sales both online and through our retail new car dealerships here at Auto Credit Express.

The website we created also explains the bad credit auto loans process so applicants can avoid a tote the note dealer as well as the issues that can lead to repossession.

One issue

One of those issues deals with financing a compact or midsize car to save on interest, gas and car insurance costs. Financing for the shortest term possible also means you’ll be in a position to re-finance or take out another loan at a lower interest rate sooner.

Most people with bad credit, therefore, will pick a used car. But there is often another choice an affordable new car.

New cars are reliable, covered by a warranty and rebates and new car incentives can lower the selling price and can sometimes contribute to the down payment requirements of bad credit lenders.

With nearly three weeks left in October, there is still time to check out one of the following affordable new cars:

The top 10 least expensive new cars for October 2011

We’ve taken the time to combine the most affordable new vehicles in the US (nine of them 2011 models and one of them a 2012) with any available new car rebates to come up with the ten least expensive vehicles for the month of October, 2011. All vehicle prices include destination charges, but not the taxes or fees that vary by state.

Our number one car this month, the 2011 Chevrolet Aveo, is just over $11,000 before taxes and has one of the largest dealer networks in the business! Since this Aveo is a base model and a 2011 as well, you may have to do some searching to find one. But if you can, you’ll find it’s a great deal for the month of October.

As we see it

Affordable new cars, half on this list with October new car incentives, are a great way to be sure the car you’re driving is reliable. Some lenders even allow a portion of those new car rebates to contribute towards the down payments of no credit auto loans.

At Auto Credit Express we help people with bad car credit find a dealer for their best chance at approved auto loans.

So if you’re serious about getting your auto credit back on track, you can begin the process now by filling out our online car loans bad credit application.

Dear Credit Score Report,
If
someone with a credit score of 750 puts me as an authorized user on their
credit card — when my score is 542 — will it affect their credit negatively? — Tonianne

Hey Tonianne,
Your poor credit history alone wont hurt the primary
cardholders credit score. But if you arent careful about how you use that
shared credit card, your borrowing behavior just might.

Your friend has a credit score
of 750, which suggests he or
she has a history of responsible borrowing. Your low credit score, meanwhile,
indicates that you have a short credit history or a record of less-than-careful
borrowing. By being added to that credit card, however, it should appear on
your credit report and — assuming the card has a long, positive credit history
– help improve your credit score. (Youll need to check with the card issuer
about its specific policies on reporting authorized accounts.) But the opposite
isnt true: Your credit history wont appear on your friends credit report. Being
added as an authorized user will not cause your credit history to be combined
with that of the primary account holder, so their good credit score will not be
affected by your poor history, says Rod Griffin, credit bureau
credit bureau Experians
director of public education. The only change will be the addition of the
account to the authorized users credit history, he says.

The card accounts appearance on your credit report should
improve your FICO score, which is the score most popular with US lenders. To
the extent the account is in good standing, has a low balance and so on, the
persons FICO score is likely to benefit, says Jason Sprenger, FICOs
public relations manager.

That isnt necessarily true for other scoring models. For
example, VantageScore, the scoring model launched by the three credit bureaus
in March 2006, didnt always consider authorized user accounts. VantageScore
was designed without including authorized users, but lenders can choose an
option to include them in the original version of the scoring model, says
VantageScore President and CEO Barrett Burns. But it has adapted: Due to
requests from the market, the company began including authorized user accounts
when it launched the second version of its score, known as VantageScore 2.0, in
October 2010, Burns says.

Despite the possible benefits to your credit score, there are plenty of reasons for you to
remain cautious with that card. Thats because by making you an authorized user,
your friend will be putting his or her own finances and credit history at
possible risk.

Why is that? First, as the authorized user, you arent
legally responsible for repaying any debt accumulated on that shared account.
So if you run up a bunch of expensive charges that you dont have the cash to
cover, your friend will be the one left ultimately responsible for repaying the
bank.

Second, any trouble you get into with that account, such as the
previously mentioned large balances, can appear on both the primary
cardholders credit history and your own. That means any mistakes you make
wont just hurt your credit but your friends credit, as well.

Therefore, you should be less concerned about your past
credit problems hurting your friends credit score — and more concerned about
the impact any future flubs will have on that shared account. Otherwise, any financial
mistakes could also get in the way of your friendship.

Good luck!

Having enough income but not reporting it all can be a big problem when trying to qualify for no credit auto loans

What we have seen

People with bad credit often don’t understand the problem it creates when they get paid “under the table” and they’re trying to qualify for horrible credit auto loans.

We know this situation because for almost two decades we’ve been affiliated with bad credit car sales here at Auto Credit Express.

Our web site designed for individuals with poor credit explains the problem credit auto loan process along with the concerns that can lead to repossession while showing them why, unlike a tote the note dealer, the loans our dealers offer can result in better credit scores.

Income reporting

One reason many bad credit customers end up at a buy and pay here dealer is that they’re unable to get approved auto loans because they either don’t receive a W-2 or the W-2 they receive at year end doesn’t reflect all their earnings.

If a W-2 doesn’t show everything they’ve earned it’s usually because they’re paid under the table either in cash or with a non-payroll check with nothing taken out for payroll taxes.

Some employees don’t even receive a W-2. But even if you are an independent contractor you should still receive a form 1099-MISC. You then report this income, less any expenses, on the Schedule C of your 1040 income tax form.

If you are paid in either of these two ways, you are still required to file a tax return and report your entire income. This is especially important if you have bad credit.

Proving your income

Traditional banks usually don’t require proof of income to qualify for a car loan, but this isn’t the case with bad credit lenders. If you don’t get a W-2 or your income is not listed on a professionally prepared tax return, it might as well not even be there.

Although you might have bank records that show you’ve received this money, if it isn’t reported on your tax return, you have no proof.

Bad credit lenders have minimum income levels. If you are paid in cash or as an independent contractor, they’ll still use your taxable income to compute a debt-to-income ratio and car budget. This can affect people with cash and 1099 income in a couple of ways:

1. Typical bad credit lenders have minimum monthly income requirements that range from $1,500 to $1,800 per month. If you make this much but your tax return doesn’t show it, you won’t qualify for a loan.

2. If your reported income meets a lender’s requirements but your income is actually higher, there’s always the chance that your monthly expenses are out of proportion to your reported income. For example, if you report an income of $2,000 per month but your actual income is $3,500, you might have monthly expenses of $1800. Even though your actual debt to income ratio is fine, the difference between your reported income and your actual expenses will not qualify you for a problem credit auto loan.

The Bottom Line

If you receive cash payments or work as an independent contractor and need to finance your next car with a bad credit auto loan, you have to look at the income you pay taxes on and how this will affect both the income and debt to income requirements of poor credit lenders.

Auto Credit Express specializes in placing customers with bad credit with dealers that can help them, are knowledgeable and work with a number of lenders for the best chance of getting approved auto loans.

So if you’re serious about credit repair and getting your car credit back, you can begin by filling out our online car loans bad credit application now.

As the fallout from the 2008 financial crisis spread to
credit card

issuers in 2010, as many as 11 in 100 credit card accounts fell so
far behind that banks charged them off as noncollectable. Though
that ratio has dropped by half since then, you may be one of the
many consumers who now face rebuilding your credit with tarnished
credit reports. According to the Federal Reserve, your credit
report can impact more areas of your life than just whether you can
pay for your next online shopping order with a credit card:

  Insurance companies

  use
credit scores

to assess risk and set rates. Some actuaries believe that
consumers with bad credit might destroy their property to escape
car loans or home loans.

  Employers

review credit reports to determine trustworthiness of job
applicants. If your career involves handling cash, credit card
numbers or customer information, your employers want to reduce
the risk that a new hire will steal to cover their debts.

  Telephone, cable

and other utility companies use credit scores to determine new
service deposits. If your credit history is doubtful, ordering a
new cell phone or a cable box could cost you extra setup fees and
higher deposits.

  Landlords

use credit scores to rank potential tenants. Because credit
reports omit personal details like race and age, landlords can
legally use them to select applicants they feel will pay the rent
on time while causing the least property damage.

Secured credit cards

boost your credit score by building trust with new lenders. Youre
putting your own money on the line, leaving hundreds or thousands
of dollars on deposit in a savings account you cant touch. Churn
some routine expenses on your card and revolve up to about a third
of your credit line to get the biggest impact on your credit
report. Fail to make monthly payments or exceed your limit, and the
deals off.

Unlike
instant approval credit cards

, secured credit cards require additional scrutiny by loan officers
and can take up to four weeks for approval. Banks use the time
frame as a filter: if you can get by without your deposit for the
better part of a month, they can see that you have the cash flow to
properly rebuild your credit. We can suggest five sources for
secured credit cards that wont rip you off:

      Capital One Secured MasterCard

If your credit isnt at rock bottom, Capital One may offer
you a credit line greater than the amount of your initial
deposit. Making this cards 22.9 percent APR pay off requires
leaving the unsecured portion of your credit line untouched.
When the bank reports your low credit utilization and your
on-time payments to the credit bureaus, youll enjoy a slight
lift in your credit score. Maintain your good habits over time,
and Capital One may even graduate you to one of its cash back
rewards cards.

Orchard Bank Classic MasterCard and Classic
Visa

If you can afford to park a larger deposit with this
division of HSBC (which is being acquired by Capital One),
youll benefit from a better credit utilization percentage.
Orchard waives the first year of its $35 annual fee for new
customers while offering a 7.90 percent APR on purchases. A
cash advance APR of nearly 21 percent means youll need to
deposit money you wont need to touch for a while to get the
most from this card.

      Citi Secured Card

Citi has rolled out one of the industrys most aggressive
fraud prevention systems, and its included in this $29 annual
fee secured credit card. Make 18 months of consistent payments
and you could be considered for one of Citis unsecured cards.
At this writing, the variable interest rate on the Citi Secured
Card hovers at just above 18 percent.

      First Progress Platinum Secured MasterCard

Synovus Banks exposure to subprime credit card debt during
the financial crisis forced it to launch two new brands: the
familiar Green Dot prepaid debit card and the new First
Progress secured credit card. Of the two, only the First
Progress card reports customer activity to all three credit
bureaus. At this time, Synovus markets First Progress with a
$39 annual fee and an APR below 15 percent.

      Your local credit union

As member-owned, non-profit organizations, credit unions
offer some of the best terms on secured credit cards. For
instance, Navy Federal Credit Union offers a version of its
nRewards credit card with no annual fee, an APR under 9
percent, and up to 1 percent cash back on purchases. Teachers
Federal Credit Union offers a no-fee secured credit card with
an APR below 7 percent. If youre not a teacher or a Navy
veteran, your local credit union may offer similar terms.
However, you may have to commit to attending a money management
seminar and to bringing your other financial accounts into your
credit union membership.

Desperate for credit?

Heres a final word of caution. Our website about the best
credit cards on the market often attracts questions from consumers
in trouble with their credit. According to Amber Stubbs, managing
editor for CardRatings.com, these questions often indicate a
serious money problem that a new account isnt likely to solve.

Secured credit cards wont magically improve your credit score
overnight, and they wont get you instant cash. To enjoy the real
benefits of credit cards, youll need to keep your secured account
in good standing for a year or two. Commit to earning and saving
more money, so you can control your credit cards instead of letting
them control you.

Affordable new cars are sometimes a bad credit car choice when financing with no credit auto loans

Working with bad credit

Even if you have bad credit you should know that in some cases it is possible to finance a new car with online car loans bad credit.

We know this can happen because Auto Credit Express has been working in bad credit auto sales for over twenty years. During that time we’ve helped hundreds of buyers get horrible credit auto loans.

We’ve also shown them how they can stay away from a tote the note dealer (applicants outside our retail areas can fill out our online auto loans application to find the right kind of dealer near them) while teaching them about the loan process (to prevent repossession).

Bad credit auto loans

Having been in the bad credit car loan business for some time, we have seen the number of banks that deal in subprime car loans grow from just a handful to many times that.

Many of these lending programs include the possibility of financing a new car. And while the lending requirements for horrible credit auto loans are much stricter than a typical car loan, there are still quite a few new car models that could qualify for these programs.

Financing new cars

There are a number of benefits to buying a new car:

1. These vehicles come with a new car warranty
2. Many new car warranties include free roadside assistance
3. Many new cars come with the option to purchase an extended warranty to cover the entire loan term.
4. Buying a new car also means you have a choice of colors and options.

Disadvantages

The biggest drawback to purchasing a new car when financing with a regular or bad credit auto loan is depreciation. A new car will typically lose at least 15% of its value as soon as it’s driven off the lot. This means that most of your monthly payments during the first couple of years will be lost to depreciation. This means you’ll be “upside down” in the loan for at least 2 ½ years of a 5 year loan.

The solution: put at least 20% down and shorten the length of the loan to 48 or even 36 months.

As we see it

Many bad credit customers financing with bad credit auto sales may have the choice of financing a new car.

Another suggestion if you have bad credit: driving around from dealer to dealer can be time consuming as well as embarrassing and discouraging. At Auto Credit Express, we specialize in placing customers with bad credit with dealers that can help get them financed.

So if you are serious about getting your car credit back on track, you can begin now by filling out our online auto loans application now.
